Taxonomy: f. Enteromonadidae
Animal: Enteromonas hominis 6 18.jpg
Sites: Gut
Comment:
Enteromonas hominis trophozoites pear shaped 4 - 10 x 3 - 6 microns in faecal smear stained with Trichrome. N.B. One nucleus and 3 anterior flagella and 1 posterior flagella extending free posteriorly or laterally although difficult to see. One side of body flattened and no cytostome as in C. mesnili. They were from a specimen from a 50 year old female with 2 months history of diarrhoea following a trip to Africa. They were present in one of 4 stool samples presented over a 6 week period. Also present were Entamoeba coli trophozoites and cysts and Enteromonas cysts. No pathogenic organisms were isolated and the cause of her symptoms was not identified. These parasites are often not reported because of their small size and if not examined fresh within 30 minutes of collection or fixed fresh, they disintegrate and also because of the difficulties in identification under LM. They are considered non-pathogenic but are little studied. EM was performed on this specimen to assist in identification. (see 12 04, 05)
